Pinterest Traffic showing up as Direct in Google Analtyics

Loves to help

I know there has always been some Pinterest traffic that got lumped into the Direct Traffic source in Google Analtyics, but recently, a HUGE portion of Pinterest traffic is showing up under the Direct Source instead of the Pinterest source.

Is this just a temporary glitch, or just how it's going to be now?

Hi Cathy!

Thank you for reaching out with your question. I understand that you've noticed a significant portion of your Pinterest traffic showing up as Direct Traffic in Google Analytics instead of the Pinterest source. Let me provide some insights on this matter.

It's important to note that the way traffic is attributed in Google Analytics is determined by various factors, including the referral information provided by the source website. However, sometimes the referral information can be lost or obscured during the user's journey, resulting in traffic being labeled as Direct instead of the actual referral source.

Pinterest has been aware of this issue, and they have been working on improving the referral information to ensure more accurate tracking in Google Analytics. While I cannot provide specific details on the timeline or resolution, it is likely that Pinterest is actively addressing this issue to provide a better user experience for both creators and users.

In the meantime, I recommend keeping an eye on any updates or announcements from Pinterest regarding this matter. It's also a good practice to regularly review and compare your analytics data across different sources to get a comprehensive understanding of your traffic patterns.

By the way, your Pinterest page, Healthy Ambitions, sounds fantastic! I'm sure many people would love to explore your yummy Keto recipes. Keep up the great work and happy pinning!

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Best of luck with your Pinterest endeavors!

Warm regards,

Hamza Ali

@healthyambitionsteam I noticed this too on my clients' accounts.  Checking it again, it looks like it has bounced back to mostly "Organic social" with some "direct" like it was before.

It's so hard to reliably track Pinterest traffic in GA.  Have you tried using UTM parameters on your links yet?
