Hey there!  @voxdominus No, you don't have to be a well qualified graphic designer in order to be successful on Pinterest, but there are some tips you should follow:

A well-designed pin should have an aesthetic look and a strong message with a text overlay on it. Texts should be short and simple so your customers can understand it easily.

Use your best images, try to pin high quality images rather than pinning a lot of poor quality pins.

Make sure the photo you find is large enough, so it doesn’t appear blurry or pixelated, which looks very unprofessional.

Hope it was helpful.

@voxdominus , You don't have to have any graphic designs skills whatsoever. You will get better and better as you make your pins and see what works best for getting clicks to your site.

If you're just beginning making pins, I would suggest doing a search of keywords in your niche and analyzing what the top ranking pins (ones that show up in the first few rows) look like.

What colors are they using? What font are they using? What do the pictures look like? Picture placement?

Maybe try doing a little experiment of which colors, fonts, picture placement, wording, and so on works best for you. Do a few pins with mostly orange, reds, pinks (warm colors) and try a few with Blues & greens (cool colors). Post at your high traffic times and see which ones get more clicks.

I would stay away from script font as it can be hard to read when scrolling quickly as most people do. Large bold font works best for me, but maybe do some tests with that too.

Don't forget to add your logo or url on the pin picture so just in case someone steals your pin, it's easier to fix.

Another huge thing some people don't think about is the Pin title and description. Using good keywords in those along with pinning them to good keyworded boards can get you a long way.

What about "20 design rules you should never break", "15 Graphic Design Rules for Non-Designers", "The 5 rules of design composition and layout", etc?

Thanks for the shout @PinterestGabby !!

Hi @voxdominus , I started creating pins with ZERO experience. You certainly do not need any formal training to create awesome pins. My advice is to start by observing other high performing pins. You'll see a theme; eye catching text, colors, high quality & high resolution photos are the pillars to a great pin.

The links you shared on graphic design rules are great guidelines too, although I find that pin design has some nuances vs. traditional graphic design applications. For instance, I design most of my pins with a photo on top, a photo on the bottom and white space with text in between. I play around with the font type a lot. Some of my pins are just a photo with text overlay, there's not much to even design.

If you want to gain more expertise, I would research more on font design (combinations of font styles, types and sizes etc.). Font styling can help your pins stand out.

Lastly, a big thing to remember is that most users are on their phone and scroll the page pretty fast. Make sure your designs will stand out on mobile!!

I hope that helps!!!

All the best-

Liz

Thank you Liz!
Very well!

I really want to gain more expertise, I want pins stand out on mobile, not PC, so I ask questions.
