“How can I gain more followers on Pinterest?” is one of the questions I hear the most when it comes to growing a Pinterest account.Gaining Pinterest followers is an important step to grow your Pinterest presence, but it can be hard to gain followers, even though you might be seeing a high number of profile views. This will likely leave you wondering what’s going on, and how you can make your Pinterest account more attractive to followers.

But, before we dive in, keep in mind that having a high number of followers isn't the only measure of success. Building an engaged following who is genuinely interested in your content is what matters the most.

It All Starts With Content

The first thing you need to realize when you’re trying to gain followers is that followers come from content and views. Creating quality content that is creative, positive, inspiring, and helps people improve their lives is key!

People Need to See Your Content

In order to attract people, your content (pins) need to be seen. Pinterest is a visual search engine where people come to find and gather new ideas. Make sure to use keywords and terms that people are searching for when creating your pins. Use the Pinterest Trends Tool to help you hone in what your audience wants to see.

They Won’t All Follow You– And That’s Ok!

Not everybody who clicks on your pins or profile is going to follow you, and that’s totally ok! It’s a regular occurrence for somebody to see your Idea Pin, go to your profile, look around, and then leave. Think of it like window shopping. A viewer might come to your profile, check out your Pinterest boards, read some of your information, and then just not engage any further. That’s normal… and besides, there’s a lot more to your Pinterest audience than just the number of followers you have.

While we might tell ourselves that we want everybody who sees our Pinterest accounts to become Pinterest followers, the reality is that follower numbers aren’t everything. What you really want are the people who are interested in what you have to offer– not just random people. Why? Because the people who are actually interested in our content will take action! Every time somebody follows you on Pinterest, they end up seeing more of your content. If they’re not interested in what you have and they just blindly follow, nothing comes of it. What’s more, it tells the Pinterest algorithm that your content isn’t relevant because they don’t click on it or engage with it– they scroll past it.

So how can you get the people who are viewing your profile to actually follow you?

Optimize Your Profile

Make sure your profile tells Pinterest users exactly what they will find in your account and what they will benefit from following you. Give them a reason to follow, let them know how you will inspire their lives if they follow you.

Check this previous post about optimizing your Pinterest profile.

Ask People to Follow You

Add a subtle but effective call to action to your Idea Pins. Something as simple as “Like this idea? Follow for more!” or “Like this idea? Save and follow for more!” works perfectly. Sometimes people need that little reminder of what they should do next.

Give these ideas a try. Create content that folks are looking for, use keywords and the Pinterest Trends Tool, optimize your profile, and use calls to action. Your pins will be seen by more people that will follow and engage with your content.
