How to Use Keywords on Pinterest

Using keywords (Pinterest's SEO or search engine optimization is essential to effectively market on Pinterest as it's a visual search engine. Optimizing your Pinterest with relevant keywords is key for increasing your reach on Pinterest. (getting found by your ideal client).

There are 3 main ways to find keywords which I'll share below, but note that you should create a Keyword List (try using a google doc) so you have all those keywords at hand when you are creating pins.  This way, you can immediately know which keywords are best and you can use a variety of them on different pins to cover all your bases.

Here are three ways to find keywords (the last one is MY FAVORITE):

Manual Research

The first method for doing keyword research is using the Pinterest search bar directly and seeing what drops down. Start typing keywords and see what shows up in the drop-down menu. Write down or note any keywords or keyword phrases that will be relevant to your audience and content.

You can also do the alphabet soup method for additional recommendations. For example, if you are a wedding photographer and write about wedding photography, type ‘wedding photography a’ to see what auto-completes, then type ‘wedding photography b’ and continue through the whole alphabet. The downside to this method is that super time-consuming as you are doing things manually.

Pinterest Trends Tool

The Pinterest Trends Tool is an excellent tool for seeing how your keywords are currently trending on Pinterest and if there are any other relevant trending keywords you can use. They just updated the Pinterest Trends tool so you can now filter in so many ways!

You can also combine this tool with the manual type of research to figure out great keywords to use. This tool is incredible to determine the best time of year for some keywords.

Use The Pinterest Keyword Tool

Knowing the keyword volume means you know which keywords get the most searches.  This is such valuable information and you find these keywords on the Pinterest Advertising platform. Some people don’t even know it’s there because they are working on organic Pinterest marketing so they wouldn’t think to look in the ad tool.

In order to use this tool, you must have a business account set up first.  You can only access the Ads tab if you have a business account! If you haven’t done that yet, you can easily do it with Pinterest’s step-by-step instructions.

You can access the Pinterest keyword research tool by going to your Business Hub and clicking the Ads tab at the top of the page. Don’t worry - you won’t be creating an ad, this will take you to the Promoted Pin creation area.

Then take these steps:

  • Click on the Create Ads
  • Create a Manual Campaign
  • Select Drive Consideration
  • Click red Continue button at the bottom
  • Under Targeting Details at the top, Select Choose Your Own
  • Select Interest and Keywords
  • Click Ad Keywords

Start doing keyword research for your Pinterest account. It’s the best Pinterest keyword tool because it comes directly from Pinterest!

Here are some steps to use the tool:

  • Type in a main search term
  • You’ll see the search volume.
  • Save the ideas by clicking the + button to create a list.
  • Finally, copy the list and save it to your Keyword List Document

Don’t forget to capture the keyword volume and add it to your list.  This way, you will create a prioritized list of the most important keywords for your Pinterest account.

I hope this helps! I've love to hear in the comments what your main keyword is and the volume.
